There are a number of facilities, services and groups for young people in Kirknewton.  Details about schools, education and learning can also be found the Council website.

0- school age years

There is a Babies and Toddler group which meets in the Church Hall every Thursday from 9.30 -11.30am.  £1 per family for children 0-3.

From the age of 2 the Kirknewton Playgroup is available to parents.  Contact – times listed below

There are  a number of local nurseries, which are listed in our business section. Speak to them about their transport options from Kirknewton Primary nursery.

School years

Most children go to Kirknewton Primary.  Pupil placement details are available here

Most children go on to Balerno High School – details of the school are on their website

Primary School kids love going to the Kosy Kafe in the Village Hall every Friday from 4pm-5pm for free drinks and cake (run by the Church) and the Youth Club from P6 onwards on Friday evenings from 6-8pm in the Green Room or Village Hall (run by KCDT).


KCDT offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for children, including programmes for JASS, Saltire Awards, John Muir Awards and Duke of Edinburgh.  Contact Laura Bilton, Youth and Volunteer Co-ordinator for more information at

The Kirknewton East Calder Church run various activities and outside groups from Tae Kwon Do, Brownies, Ladies Bible Studies, Babies and Toddlers groups, Pilates, Singing Groups and Women’s Rural.  Guides are on Mondays, Brownies on Tuesday, Tae Kwon Do on Wednesday and Baby and Toddlers Group on Thursdays.
