WE GOT £8000 – BUT COULD GET £12,000.  VOTE NOW

KCDT have been successful in a funding application to create a sensory garden in Kirknewton Woodland. The funding is being provided by Tesco Bags of Help Initiative. The scheme will see three community groups and projects awarded grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.  The Kirknewton Community Development Trust aims to create a sensory garden in The Kirknewton Community Woodland. The Sensory garden would be filled with plants, features and equipment which would create a sensory experience, stimulating the senses of its visitors so that they can touch, smell and hear things which are reassuring, inspiring and relaxing. The garden would be an ideal place for community members to visit, especially benefiting the elderly, those with disabilities as well as young children. Now over to you. The Trust will receive either £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000 to create this project. With £12,000 we can create a sensory garden with added features such as an art space filled with wooden sculptures. To support us, please visit Tesco East Calder from 27 February until 6 March and you can vote for who should receive the £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 awards. All support is appreciated!

The Kirknewton Green Room is 2!

The Kirknewton Green Room celebrates its second birthday on Thursday 25th February.  The zero energy eco building, developed by Kirknewton Community Development Trust (KCDT), has been self sufficient in heating and lighting thanks to a 4.0 kW solar photovoltaic system and high levels of insulation.

The Green Room cost £140,000 to build, supported by Leader, KCDT funds and hundreds of local volunteer hours.  Projects run in and from the building have been supported by £250,000 of Big Lottery Scotland funding.  The Village Hall, built over 100 years ago and redeveloped in 1968, has recently had a £20,000 upgrade funded by West Lothian Council.

Working alongside the Village Hall Committee we now have two spaces in a central location for events and groups including kids parties, movie showings, meetings for community council/gala/allotment association, training facilities, hot desk & study space, fundraisers, dance schools, PC repairs, communication skills for kids, highland dancing, keyboarding, boxcir, playgroup, crafting for kids & adults, pilates, babies hip hop, rainbows, brownies, art therapy, music for babies, baby showers, Zumba, job club, financial advice, bookbugs, sports for kids, cafe for kids, theatre and concert performances, youth club and a place to drop in for advice, a chat or a drink.

Most of our events are run by local people and party bookings are open to people from Kirknewton and beyond!  You can access information about some of the groups here.  You can book the Green Room or Village Hall on 01506 883988 or contact Gill Greaves on 07816 880175.  You can also e mail at  Cost of hire is from £10 an hour.
